This is general information, not tax advice. Check GOV.UK or speak to an accountant about your situation.
We explain how the rules and software work. We can’t give advice on your own tax, legal or financial situation.
What we do
- Explain rules and processes, such as Making Tax Digital, in plain English.
- Link to the GOV.UK and HMRC pages we used, so you can check them.
- Show when we last checked each guide.
- Explain what different software does and whether it’s on HMRC’s software finder, with the date we checked.
What we don’t do
- Tell you how much tax you owe or what you can claim.
- Tell you whether you need to sign up for MTD, or whether you’re exempt.
- Recommend a specific product for your business.
- Act as your accountant or tax adviser, or speak to HMRC for you.
We’re not HMRC or part of government, and we’re not connected to or endorsed by HMRC.
Where to get help with your situation
- GOV.UK guidance. Start with HMRC’s Use Making Tax Digital for Income Tax guide and the online checker for whether and when you need to use MTD.
- HMRC’s digital assistant. GOV.UK’s Help and support section links to it. GOV.UK says it can’t give personalised advice but can answer questions about MTD.
- Contact HMRC. Use Self Assessment: general enquiries.
- Extra support. If a health condition or your circumstances make contacting HMRC difficult, see Get help from HMRC if you need extra support.
- Someone who helps you. GOV.UK explains how a friend or relative can help you with your tax.
- An accountant or tax adviser can look at your circumstances and advise you.
- Software questions. GOV.UK says HMRC can’t advise on specific software products, so contact the software provider.
Our examples are illustrative
Where we use an example, it’s labelled as illustrative. It isn’t a real person and the figures aren’t a calculation of anyone’s tax.
Rules change
GOV.UK guidance changes. Every guide shows a “Last checked” date. If something has changed since then, GOV.UK is the authority. If you spot a guide that’s out of date, please tell us.
